Diabetics Exposed to Telmisartan And enalaprIL

DETAIL looked at the renoprotective effects of MICARDIS® in comparison with ACE inhibition in high risk patients with diabetes and hypertension

Why conduct this study?

Diabetic nephropathy is the most important cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Europe and the USA.1,2 Nearly 80% of patients with diabetes who go on to develop ESRD also have a history of hypertension.

One of the signs of renal damage is the decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Drug inhibition of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) appears to protect against renal disease.

Both angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and ACE inhibitors have demonstrated renoprotective effects.1,3-6 ARBs are recommended as first-line treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy.   The aim of the DETAIL study was to compare the long-term renoprotective effects of MICARDIS® and the ACE inhibitor enalapril by measuring GFRs in patients with hypertension and early diabetic nephropathy.7,8
